26 inch tall figurines that have red mark like ludwigsburg
by Brenda Bagwell
26 inch tall figurines that have red mark like Ludwigsburg :- I recently purchased 2 figurines at an estate auction. Their was a lot of good art and that what was people had come for...so I got the figurines. They are 26 inches tall with very detailed features -- they have fingernails!
There is damage, some flowers broken off, a missing finger on a putti and no arrows in his quill. a crack in the column. But they really are exquisite. I have a gallery set up with pics at http://gallery.me.com/hbobel username bbstatues and password secret. One of the pics shows the mark and you can super size it. I had a gentleman from Germany tell me they are early 20th century Bock walendorf.
Please let me know what you think.

Dear Brenda
You would have been better served putting this query on the public forum of my main Pottery Marks site - www.figurines-sculpture.com. Secondly, you should have put your email into the submission form when prompted, not within the main body of your submission as we do not publish emails due to the terrible spam problems which can result when the spam bots pick up your address.
That said, I would agree with the person who told you the figures were more like Wallendorf than Ludwigsburg. However, I have never seen Wallendorf listed as having forged Ludwigsburg marks. They have always had their own distinctive set of marks since 1764. I may have missed this part of their history though if it is true - but remember, I am no expert in the history of German pottery. At the early part of the 20th Century when they were producing many figurines of this type they were a bit strapped for cash at times and their management was somewhat disjointed, so it may have happened in terms of supplying an estate with replicas of the real thing for a lesser cost than the real thing if you see what I mean.
The Far East producers, however, are often known to impersonate famous marks (normally quite badly - and I think your mark is quite bad actually) so the figures may be accused of coming from there, but the provenance would suggest otherwise.
You can read more about Wallendorfer or Wallendorf of Germany in this article on the PM&M website here.
