ballerina figurines Query. - I have a ballerina figurine which was my grandmothers and would like to know a bit about it and also if it may be of value!
It is called 'Lola' and has a blue mark (crown) with the word 'alka'? underneath it with 'Dresden Dec' below that. it has what looks like a gold initial 'Fe' and the number 140 imprinted on the bottom.

Dear Toni,
The manufacturer is "Alka" and was a West German company that goes back to 1872. Founded in Coburg, in the east of Germany, it moved to western Germany after the war. The special decoration on your figurine is called 'Dresden lace' after being made famous by the Dresden porcelain factories. It uses real lace dipped in liquid porcelain clay and fired onto the figure.
The name comes from a combining of the surnames of the 2 owners in 1927 - Willy Alboth and Georges Kaiser (ie AL-KA)

The factory later evolved into Kaiser Porcelain
