China Figurine Query - Do you know who makes this cute little boy?:- My wife fell in love with this statue that she saw on ebay and we lost the bid. I have looked for one like it but we can't even figure out who made it. Can you point us in a direction? I have pictures

Peter Holland (sculptor) says:-
Hi
This item is exquisite in the modelling. The face, the hair, the finger, the toast, the apple, the napkin, the natural pose and real life baby cuteness (so unlike the soppiness of Lladro and Italian modelling), I could go on....
All this ultra high quality of sculpt and finish suggest this is a genuine antique perhaps early 20th C. I would say this quality is Germanic - from a high quality German maker.
I am very surprised there is no pottery mark. I would normally expect to see a mark on an item like this.
I have seen examples of this quality from makers such as Carl Scheidig from Gräfenthal in East Germany. They made figures of this quality between 1906 and 1917. Their wares would normally be marked with a crown and 'S'.
Bing & Grondahl or B & G of Denmark also made children figurines of fantastic quality, which had very similar glaze and colour detail, the difference being the modelling was normally slightly more stylized and angular (although still very much based on real poses rather than over-sentimentalised latin interpretations). I highly recommend you check out B&G. Your wife will be bowled over. I think these figs sell for peanuts and so now is a great time to build a collection. B&G are a great place to start a collection.
I couldn't think of a better investment right now (apart from mine and John's latest very small edition lady figurines available on this website ;-)
If you have a mark, please send it in.
If you do start a collection, please do share your news with us in our Circle of Friendship here on this website.
