It was, of course Spode who invented the process of bone china production in 1799. "I was glad to see the true English Fine bone China figurine collector passionate in their determination to collect Staffordshire-made figurines when I read our china figurines comments section", says Rob. Here is a remarkable story from Rob:- As an ex-Spode employee, Robert had an 'old cutting tool' (see the lower thinner tool in the picture) bestowed to him by Roger Green, ex production manager of Royal Worcester (sister company to Spode).
In order to prepare sculptures for mould-making the original clay sculpture from the master artist has to be cut into segments. The cutting tool has to be very sharp yet very flexible, yet very strong. The blade of the "old cutting tool" is made of Victorian whale bone from a corset, and as such, is a relatively new tool being a mere 150 years old. Rob inherited this tool from Roger when Royal Worcester's UK figurine manufacturing closed down . English history, quality, craftsmanship, romance and prestige Think again!....

However, these experienced collectors are being joined by a band of 21st century collectors too young to remember the past times of a gentler era. They are driven by a new dimension of art appreciation which runs alongside a new rush of romantic blood which is set to run into a 'Nouveau Baroque' for the 2010's. The concept of 'chuck out the chintz' has proved to have been short-lived and so wrong. But that was then and this is now. Leading edge couture designers like Basia Zarzycka are already there, leading the new romantic movement. You only have to visit her amazing Sloane Square shop in Chelsea to see where it's all going. Happily for us, Basia is happy to be part of our core team and we are planning mouth watering figurines together - the like of which have never ever been seen before. Essentially, we will be creating a new art form based on traditional arts & craft skills. The wow factor will be astonishing, sending ripples through contemporary art collecting in general let alone the bone china figurine collectors."
