H. Meisel figurine
by Barbara Smith
(St. James, MO 65559)
I have a china figurine which has the following inscriptions on the bottom:
H. MEISEL
Rosenthal DEKORATION Bahnhof Setb ENTWURF Bavaria OTTO KOCH PASTELL handgemait CHINA
T.S. ack
We are unsure about all the writings on the bottom. Otto Koch and T.S. ack are in writting form. The figurine is a young black man in a turbin and costume. One arm is broken and the other arm and hand is holding a wafer of some sort. This figurine is 6-7 inches high. The figurine was brought over to this country from Germany by my mother after WWII. We are inquiring about the value and origin. Thank you for any help you might provide.
================================================= Dear Barbara,
Without photographs, it is hard to properly identify your figurines, but Rosenthal always make quality ceramics.
The name, Otto Koch is one of an excellent German designer, (1901 - 1974) who worked for Rosenthal from 1920 to 1966 and was an important figure within their history. Koch was a sculptor and painter. In 1920 he became head of the art department of the factory Bahnhof, Selb which, at that time, was newly founded in Plößberg. In 1931 he was promoted to a senior position within that factory and in 1945 he became factory manager. Philip Rosenthal was quoted as saying about about Koch: "He would ever scrutinize to the last, but was especially open-minded towards his team of employees. The training of apprentices was a big issue for him."
They sound like they will be very good quality.
To find out more you could go to Peter Holland's own large and extensive website which is geared up to answering queries regarding valuations etc. Go to this page-

I hope that this helps.
Best regards
