"FINE BONE CHINA"
| WE ARE .......THE UK FIGURINE COLLECTIVE "We guarantee that our Fine Bone China lady figurines are exclusively made in England and use a 'Made in England' backstamp...." says Peter Holland, sculptor. |
We started our enterprise because, as some of the leading artistic figures responsible for designing and sculpting some of the most successful famous name 'bone china figurines' over the past 20 years or so, we wanted to celebrate and be proud of our English traditions.
We are very pleased with the messages of support and positive reaction we have got from our collectors:-
There are only three types of ceramics...earthenware
stoneware
porcelain
Bone china is a type of porcelain.
The other two types of porcelain are hard paste - invented by the Chinese and 'figured out' by Meissen of Dresden in 1714 and still made in Europe today.
Soft-paste is the original European attempt at recreating Chinese hard-paste porcelain.
| Bone china is the only type of porcelain to have the beautiful characteristic of bright white color, translucency and strength. |
Bone china is the celebrated and expensive form of fine porcelain. European porcelain figurines are less pure in colour (a grey/blue tint of white) and more prone to chipping.
English entrepreneur and inventor Josiah Spode II (son of the original founder of the Spode Company) was allowed to let his creative genius run free.
Thus was created a stronger, brighter type of porcelain china with the added ingredient of calcified bones.
A purer, whiter and stronger type of porcelain came onto the market - English Fine Bone China!
A very English invention, porcelain figurines made of the new bone china were quickly introduced and continuously made until now.
The UK Figurine Collective was founded in 2009 to continue the long unbroken tradition of figurines in Fine Bone China, to be made in England.
So the very formula Spode developed, is still used by generations of English potters to this day, in an unbroken line.
Getting together the materials for figurines made in bone china is considerably more costly than those used for European hard-paste.

Bone china, in comparison with all other types of porcelain figurine, is considered to be the finest product available.
After making the bone china clay itself, whose ingredients make it the most expensive clay to produce, the process of making Bone china porcelain figurines takes a many-step process in order to complete it:
