Royal Adderley Query

by Marie
(Liverpool, Merseyside, England)

I have been given a white bone china dinner service made by Royal Adderley. I have been told it was made for one of the Liverpool ship building companies in 1909. It has a gold trim with a ship building crane on it, with the date 1909. Any inofrmation on this dinner service would be helpful. Many thanks Marie.

Royal Adderley Query.
Hi Marie,
Your enquiry about your Royal Adderley plate is a very specialized one. The company themselves were a well respected old Stoke-on-Trent bone china company. They were eventually bought by the Royal Doulton group and lived on in just name only. At the time that your plate was made, though, they were a fully independent firm making some beautiful china.

Shipping plates were either commemorative for some special event of made for use on the ships. To find out about your particular plate, I think that you have to research which ship company it was in Liverpool. I would try the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool. Their address is -

Merseyside Maritime Museum
Albert Dock
Liverpool
L3 4AQ
England

Telephone 0151 478 4499

Their website is -

I hope that they can help you.

best regards

Tony

adderley rose

i have a hand made rose by Royal Adderley with peace colouring, made especially for Merck Sharpe dohme Ltd.
would you have any information on this please?
yours sincerely Sheila Adderley.

Hi Sheila,
You sound better qualified than me to know about Adderley China!.
Merck Sharpe Dohme Ltd. are a pharmaceutical company. The rose must have some significance to them.
I used to visit the Royal Adderley factory in the 1990's when it was part of the Royal Doulton group. They had some very skilled people working there. Sadly the factory went the way of so many Stoke potteries.
Maybe someone reading this might know more about it.

Best regards

Tony
